4 Ways to Stop Acid Reflux Naturally

April 11, 2011

The next time you have acid reflux or indigestion; remember these following tips and you can avoid a lot of pain and discomfort!

1- Immediate relief: This home remedy works almost immediately, and will stop acid reflux in its tracks. Add one to two tablespoons of baking soda to 8-10 ounces of water. Stir. Drink immediately. You will experience some discomfort and pressure for about 10 seconds, and then you will likely burp. Note: This isn’t going to taste as good as the food you ate that caused the acid reflux.

2- Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL): DGL has been used as a highly effective alternative to antacids and acid-blocking drugs. The active ingredient, licorice, works not by inhibiting acid production, but rather through supporting and stimulating the stomach's natural protective mechanisms. Stomach discomfort is usually attributed to an imbalance between acid secretion and the stomach's ability to protect itself against the irritation caused by the acid. Get yours here.

3- AVOID SUGAR: Sometimes prevention is the best treatment. Sugar makes the digestive system raw, and more sensitive to naturally occurring stomach acid. Sugar also disrupts normal nerve function;  interrupting the body’s ability to move food out of the stomach. This food that is essentially sitting there-rotting-can promote lots of gastric disturbances…including acid reflux.

4- AVOID Bread: Heartburn after a bucket of fried chicken or a pizza is an all too common occurrence for most people. Guess what? It’s not the pizza sauce, or the grease on the chicken…it’s the bread!! Pizza dough, burrito shells, the crust on fried foods, and even the loaf of whole-wheat bread you bought to be “healthy” all cause heartburn. Bread turns into sugar immediately upon digestion. Review number 3 on this list for more details.

What are the differences in performance and effectiveness between medications like Tums, Rolaids, Prevacid, Zegrid, Zantac, Pepcid, et. There are literally dozens of treatments out there. Which are better, or worse? Some of these have side effects that INCLUDE upset stomach- kind of ironic, right?

ADMIN: RE: Smith:: Licorice candy is not the same. In fact, you may experience more acid reflux due to the sugar content. - Thanks

ADMIN: RE: Jeremy Duggins:: Jeremy, some people have had success with aloe when it is used in conjunction with a healthy diet; one that excludes sugar and grains. The reason is- aloe works much the same as licorice, it coats the irritated areas of the esophagus and stomach so it can heal without further irritation. Thanks!
